So we just spent three long days talking about stories. We talked about them, we lived them, we thought up new ones to write later. It was good to be with so many others who understand the importance of stories.

A few notes on Marisol

Even though we are a few weeks done with New World Arts’ production of Marisol, the marketing created such a buzz (about the actual design of it), that it’s time to talk about it.

By Danny

Since 2005, I have been volunteering as art director at a downtown Goshen, black box theatre called New World Arts. On more than a few occasions it has felt like a second full time job.

After a 3 year run of rebranding the organization, developing season-long campaigns and art directing and managing the promotional runs for New World Arts performances, films and concerts, I’m stepping back. I’ve been working with not-for-profit arts organizations for the last 5 years, and New World Arts has been the most fun and involved (and at times, emotionally-charged) of the lot of them.

Before leaving I took on one final project: marketing and image work for the first performance of Season Ten: Marisol by Jose Rivera (an older script from the screenwriter of the Motorcycle Diaries). This show, about angels revolting against God and the end of the world), was one of New World’s first shows from 10 years ago. Cassie had the chance to start as Marisol, but besides that, this cast in particular was one of the best to work with. They were more than willing to have me constantly take photos for the show’s production blog, live blog table talks, and generally be everywhere in order to document and promote the show. That’s the fun part of viral and wholistic marketing: I get to be right there during the production process and then use the behind-the-scene material as it happens.

And for being dark 9 months, we did a good job: a sold out opening, and large houses during the run.

The image work I produced for this received a very good response. It’s currently out for award, but below is an image for the poster, as well as the second version of the New World Arts web site (modified when the show was extended for a third weekend).
